The Last Eridian

A Sole Survivor
The Big Ship, Empty
Rocky tells Grace that he is the only Eridian on the Blip-A. His original crew of twenty-three died from radiation sickness during the journey. He has been alone for forty-six Earth years, trying to fix the ship and complete the mission. His loneliness is palpable.
The Mask of Optimism
Despite his isolation, Rocky is cheerful and curious. He communicates with enthusiasm, using his five hands to gesture and work. He is desperate for connection, and Grace's arrival is a lifeline. He bonds with Grace over their shared mission.
The Friendship
Rocky and Grace develop a deep friendship, crossing the barrier of language and species. They work together, celebrate together, and support each other. For Rocky, this is the first companionship in decades. He becomes fiercely protective of Grace.
The Radiation Revelation

Understanding the Tragedy
Grace Explains Radiation
Grace realizes that Eridians have no knowledge of radiation because their home planet's thick atmosphere and strong magnetic field block it. Rocky's crew died from cosmic rays during the journey. Grace explains the concept, and Rocky learns that his friends died from an invisible enemy.
The Guilt of Survival
Rocky feels guilty for being the only survivor. He learns that his workshop, surrounded by Astrophage fuel, protected him from radiation. He could have saved others by moving them. The knowledge is painful, but he uses it to protect himself going forward.
The Resolve
Despite the grief, Rocky is determined to complete the mission and save Erid. His resilience is remarkable. He is a master engineer, but his emotional strength is just as important. He becomes Grace's partner in solving the Astrophage problem.
Rescue and Reunion

The Desperate Wait
Derelict in Space
When the Taumoeba contaminate the Blip-A's fuel, Rocky is stranded. He has no way to call for help. He spends weeks in the dark, trying to repair the ship, but the xenonite fuel tanks are compromised. He resigns himself to a slow death.
The Miracle
Grace's return is a miracle. Rocky hears the banging on the hull and responds via radio. Their reunion is emotional. Rocky is overjoyed and grateful. He proposes that Grace can eat Taumoeba, providing a solution to the food shortage.
A New Beginning
Rocky and Grace travel to Erid together. Rocky is reunited with his people, and Grace is welcomed as a hero. Rocky's long loneliness ends. He has a friend and a purpose. He becomes a bridge between two species.
